Martian’s Smartphone Watch Will Make You Feel Like James Bond [HANDS-ON]

At first glance, the Martian series of watches look like most any other watch. Pair them together with your smartphone, however, and you're in for a Bond-like experience you won't find on any other watch out there.

Originally inspired by trying to use a phone while on a ski trip, the watch lets you send text messages, search the web, and even make phone calls from your wrist without ever having to take your phone out of your pocket. Those are features quite a few people are apparently looking for in a watch — Martian was able to raise $221k for the project on Kickstarter earlier this year.

The creators of the watches recently stopped by Mashable's San Francisco office with a prototype of one of the three martian watch deisgns and let us give it a try.

While what we saw was still awaiting a few finishing touches, we were impressed with how the watch worked and what we were able to do with it.

Pairing the watch with your phone is done via Bluetooth, much like you might connect a wireless headset or speaker. It's an easy process, and should only take a few minutes.

Call Me, Maybe

Once you've paired the watch with your phone the real fun begins. Now when you receive a call on your smartphone, your watch will display the name of the caller on a small LED display on the watch face. Tap the top button on the side of the watch to answer the call and start chatting – just like James Bond.

The speaker on the watch is pretty loud, so it should work fine for chatting while you're cooking dinner or driving. It's not, however, designed for loud spaces, so you're likely to run into trouble if you try to answer in a loud bar or crowded subway.

While not present in the model we were able to check out, finished watches will also have gesture controls, allowing you to answer the phone with a swiping motion rather than pressing a button. Calls you don't want to take can be sent to voicemail by just shaking your wrist.

Not just for calls, the LED display also shows the incoming text messages — however, only the first 20 characters of those messages so as to not distract you too long if you're doing something where you need to keep your eyes elsewhere. You can have the entire text read to you via the watch, and respond to it via voice-to-text without pulling out your phone, a much safer alternative to reading.

Good Vibrations

A gentle double vibration means you're receiving a text and a single vibration signifies a call, so you can tell to some extent without looking at your wrist what's happening. The watch can also receive and display incoming notifications from Facebook, Twitter, Gmail and more by vibrating and displaying a notification light as those types of messages come in.

You can also set up a wireless leash between the watch and your smartphone, so if the two are ever separated by more than 20 or 30 feet the watch will vibrate and let you know. Definitely useful if you're prone to accidentally leaving your phone at home or on bar stools, and also an early alert if your smartphone's ever stolen.

Siri on Your Arm

One of the most impressive features on the Martian watch is perhaps its ability to access and interact with Siri on an iPhone.

While you may traditionally opt to bypass the digital assistant, having access to Siri on your wrist could prove to be pretty invaluable.

Siri can do most everything through the Martian watch that she can do on your phone. So, you can ask her questions like what time a movie starts or have her read and add things to your calendar while you're on the go. When docked in a speaker, you can use the watch to start playing tunes at a party.

Martian will also be providing developers with an SDK to develop applications to work alongside the watch, potentially adding more functionality in the future.

The initial run of Martian watches sold during the device's Kickstarter period will be will be shipped to backers no later than January 2013. For those who didn't get in on the Kickstarter, the watches will be available for pre-order soon from Martian's website, starting at $179.

Another smart watch, Pebble, is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2013.
