Social Media Day 2013: A Global Celebration

Mashable community members gathered on June 30 to celebrate the fourth annual Social Media Day. Participants recognized the digital revolution in a variety of ways, from all-day panel discussions to nighttime networking parties.

Thousands participated in the hundreds of Social Media Day events that took place around the world. Some of the most-attended events were hosted in Australia, Costa Rica and Sri Lanka. In the United States, Detroit, Mich., San Diego, Calif., and Miami, Fla., brought out the largest crowds.

Although it is the fourth year celebrating this day, some places are just starting their traditions, such as Ahmedabad, India, and San Pedro Sula, Honduras — both of which hosted Social Media Day events for the first time this year.

Mashable hosted an action-packed Social Media Day event at Milk Studios in New York City, where thousands of attendees enjoyed networking, refreshments and tunes from DJ Gavin Russom. We also unveiled our summer interns' DIY creations as part of The Home Depot's "call to hacktion" challenge.

More than 118,000 tweets were sent regarding Social Media Day this year, according to Peek Analytics, and roughly 20,000 of these mentions came just on June 30. Celebrities, professional sports teams, entertainment brands, non-profit organizations and media companies all tweeted Social Media Day messages to their followers, and in all, individuals from 117 countries joined in on sending Social Media Day well wishes, spreading the global reach of this day to potentially more than 147 million accounts on Twitter, according to Topsy Pro.

We're so overjoyed by the impact Social Media Day 2013 had around the world. A big thanks to all who participated. Social Media Day wouldn't be the global success that it is without the wonderful Mashable community that drives it forward.
