Love can make you do crazy things, like hoisting a boombox over your head to serenade your dream girl, sprinting to the love of your life while staring into her eyes on FaceTime, and maybe even purchasing a $4.9 million home to be closer to your boyfriend's family.
When a Reddit user posted the question, "What is the dumbest thing you've done for love?" the forum exploded with answers. Close to 5000 commenters chimed in with stories of grand romantic gestures gone wrong. Here are a few of the most cringe-worthy responses:
"Took my own braces off with nail clippers. I was head over heels in love with this chick, but found out through a friend she didn't find me attractive." - scrotum_nachos
"I failed a few tests on purpose to get some one-on-one tutoring with the professor I was infatuated with. She ended up sending her gay TA to tutor me instead." - MostlyBullshit
"I bought a Toyota pick-up truck because a girl I wanted to date said she liked them. It cost every dime I had. We went on two dates and the she got serious with somebody else... The truck died in under a year. Didn't get the girl or the truck." - dummystupid
"When I was 13, I staged a fight in front of a girl to make myself look like a bad boy. That was also the day I learned it's not easy to fake a fight and make it look real." - amcrastinator
"Not me (thankfully), but I know a guy who got a vasectomy at age 20, having no kids of his own, because his girlfriend had a son and she didn't want any more. They lasted six months." - CgRazor
"In high school, a girl I had a wicked crush on told me I'd look good with it shaved completely (it was already pretty short). I went home and shaved it to where I looked like Mr. Clean. I went to school the next day and she didn't even really notice." - TheKidinGreen
"I declined a job at Microsoft right after graduating from university because it meant moving away and I didn't want to be apart from this lovely girl. Except that didn't work out. And I wasn't able to get another shot at programming since then." - marwynn
But for a lucky few, their "dumb" romantic gesture turned out to be totally worth the risk:
"Picked a college. This was especially dumb because she was dating somebody else at the time, and she ended up not even going to college. It all worked out in the end, though. I met the love of my life the first week there and we're about to celebrate our second wedding anniversary." - LandLockedSailor
"Sold nearly everything I owned, quit my job, and moved 2000 miles to live with a woman I met online in a Yahoo Group for cat owners. Eight years later, we're still together." - ouroboris
