20 People Freaked Out by Spotify’s Holiday Condom Ads

Advertisements for Trojan condoms on Spotify are making some listeners feel really, really uncomfortable this holiday season.

People who use Spotify for free -- and not the music-streaming service's paid, ad-free versions -- are occasionally hearing the voice ads, which feature such phrases as "orgasmic pleasure" and "stimulating condoms." A man with a deep voice repeatedly says, "Trojan Man!"

During work, I heard one of the Trojan ads sandwiched between Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and Maroon 5's "One More Night." Other listeners, however, heard the condom ads while listening to Christmas or religious music at home with relatives.

Graham James, Spotify's head of U.S. communications, told Mashable the frequency of the ads, which also play on terrestrial radio, "was reduced over the holidays and they only run for 18+ free tier users."

But that didn't stop disgusted users from taking to Twitter to vent about the unexpected ads:

A lively Reddit thread also addresses the ads, with one user saying, "I would be pissed as hell if this commercial came on when I was listening to Christmas music with the family."

Is it an advertising fail? Or just the price for using a free service? Let us know in the comments.
