Econsultancy has published its first Digital Marketing and E-commerce Careers Guide, aimed at UK digital professionals looking to take the next step in their professional development. The report, which is free to registered users, looks in detail at the skills required to be a digital leader, with insight from senior managers and profiles of specialist recruitment companies.
The acute need for digital skills and experience within companies has been well documented by Econsultancy. The issue of a lack of digital talent was highlighted in our Digital Marketing: Organisational Structures and Resourcing report, where the skills shortage was described as a ticking digital talent time bomb.
Most recently, our Marketing Budgets 2012 report, published in association with Experian Marketing Services, found that a lack of staff is still a significant barrier which limits digital progress.
More encouragingly, the same report found that the majority of companies will be increasing their investment in digital staff during 2012.
So how can digital professionals make the most of the premium which businesses are currently placing on digital experience?
Our first careers guide, the Digital Marketing and E-commerce Careers Guide for Senior Professionals (registration required), has been published today. (Coming later this week is a similar report aimed at students and graduates).
In the first report, written by e-commerce consultant and Econsultancy author James Gurd, we have brought together insights from 17 senior digital professionals, profiles from 14 recruitment consultancies and executive search firms, a salary survey, and James Gurd's own advice to help provide the best information for professionals looking to accelerate their digital marketing and e-commerce careers.
According to James Gurd:
In a fast paced industry, it's not so much 'job for life' as 'industry for life', so the challenge is on planning an ascent path that can keep you challenged and motivated.
One of the biggest hurdles is knowing how to map your progression and ensure you are constantly learning, whilst getting the financial rewards relevant to your experience and skills. There is no right way to manage your career but there are recommended techniques that will help you considerably. This is where the careers guide comes in handy; it gives you practical advice when considering your next step in digital marketing and e-commerce.
Sections of the guide include:
- The key challenges for digital leaders, including the different points to consider for career advancement.
- A discussion of digital leader roles, including examples from both the client and agency side and advice on working in either a freelance or consultancy role.
- The skills required to be a leader, including practical examples of when these skills were used well and not so well.
- Advice on improving skills and experience.
- A Recruiter and Executive Search Directory featuring 14 specialist digital marketing and e-commerce firms.
