Instagram’s Major Expansion: Now You Can Like, Comment on Web

Instagram Android App Tablet Update-600The photo sharing app Instagram has redesigned its web view, allowing users to comment and like photos in the browser — making the popular mobile app an interactive web experience for the first time.

The switch comes just three days after Instagram's first update since its acquisition by Facebook.

Instagram aligned the aesthetics of its website with its app, adding a blue banner on the side. The website also show the images much larger, as TheNextWeb pointed out, taking advantage of the increasing picture quality of camera phones.

Still, some users reported trouble with commenting, and many people were surprised to discover it absent a big announcement from the company.

Instagram did not respond to requests for comment. We'll update this story as soon as we hear back.

One possibility: this sudden update could well be intended to combat Hootsuite's new Instagram integration that allows comments and Likes; this was announced earlier Thursday.

Instagram was launched in 2010 and purchased by Facebook for $1 billion in April. The deal is still in its final stages, however. Given the recent rise of Facebook stock, it could end up being worth much more than a billion dollars.
