Once again I've rounded up some of the most interesting digital marketing stats we've seen this week.
Stats include mobile marketing spend, eBay's mobile revenue, the ROI of personalisation, Google's over-use of PPC ads, and UK consumers' love affair with Amazon.

Mobile search spending predicted to rocket
- According to Juniper Research, by 2017, mobile search and discovery, which Juniper considers to include ads in the paid search, local search, augmented reality and discovery app categories, will be a $15bn per year business.
- The 'targetability' of some of these ads is considered to be very high, and high CPC rates coupled with high CTRs is causing advertisers to spend more on them, producing, of course, more revenue for companies like Google.
Investment boom
- VCs in the US poured $8.1bn into companies in Q2 2012, making it the biggest quarter for VC investment in more than a decade.
- The total number of deals invested in rose 4% year-over-year, to 812, and nearly a quarter of them (22%) were seed stage deals, perhaps a reflection of two things: the lowered costs of starting certain kinds of tech companies and the rise of super-angels and outfits like Y Combinator.
- Although social investments are down, nearly a third of the funding (29%) in the mobile space went to mobile photo and video startups.
Money rolling in for eBay
- During eBay's Q2 earnings call, CEO John Donahoe said he expects both eBay and PayPal to do more than $10bn each in mobile business this year.
- This is more than double the amount they made last year - eBay processed $5bn in mobile sales and PayPal handled $4bn in mobile transactions in 2011.
Socialcam goes for $60m
- Autodesk announced this week that it is acquiring mobile video startup Socialcam for $60m.
- The software company, which is best-known for its 3D and engineering software and not consumer internet plays, was apparently one of several companies interested in the startup, which launched a little over a year ago as a spin-off of live video upstart Justin.tv.
- Today, Socialcam is the top application on Facebook, boasting some 3.7m active daily users and 56m monthly active users. The company has built that user base with only four employees.
iPad drives mobile commerce
- According to stats from Affiliate Window's network, the iPad accounts for 40% of traffic.
- 55% of mobile commerce sales come through the iPad, followed by 29% on iPhone and 13% on Android devices.
- The stats are taken from 53m clicks and 1.5m sales between January 2011 and June 2012.
The ROI of personalisation
- 37% of companies surveyed are able to target personalised web content in the right context in real-time, according to stats from our latest Quarterly Digital Intelligence Briefing.
- June's briefing, sponsored by Adobe, looks into the latest trends around personalisation, the importance of customer trust when implementing this, and measurement of ROI.
Google ads taking over SERPs
- A look at Google search results for 'credit cards' shows that more than 51% of the page is devoted to ads for some search terms.
- And what remains, the natural search results, account for just 17% of the page.
- It transpires that only 40% of Google's visitors will see the title of the very first natural search result for this particular search term. 90% of visitors won't see the third result without scrolling.
Big business goes social
- More than 80% of the world's biggest brand owners use Twitter and Facebook, according to a study by Burson-Marsteller.
- Firms using Facebook run 10.4 brand pages each, up from 4.2 in 2011, reaching 10.1 and 5.8 in turn for Twitter.
- YouTube also saw an annual lift from 2.7 to 10.1 channels.
Tablet attracts paid search dollars
- A new report from Marin Software shows that the proportion of paid search budgets allocated to devices like Apple's iPad and Amazon's Kindle Fire reached 7% in Q2 compared with 5% in Q1, an increase of 40%.
- The share of click-throughs on tablets also increased by 33% to 8%, while smartphones delivering 10% of click-throughs on paid search ads, despite receiving a smaller 7% of revenues.
UK consumers love Amazon
- Amazon, Google and the BBC's iPlayer are the brands held in the highest regard by UK shoppers, according to a survey by YouGov.
- Amazon retained the top spot even though its index score fell by 0.6 points to 58.1. Google came second with 54.8 points, while iPlayer scored 53.7.
