Epic ‘Tap Tap Revenge’ Franchise Returns With New Offering

Long before Apple ever launched its App Store, Tap Tap Revolution was being played on iPhones worldwide.

Originally released for and played on jailbroken devices in September of 2007, the game was also one of the first available in the iPhone App Store when the shopping stop did launch — although it was then listed under a slightly different name, Tap Tap Revenge.

The exceptionally popular game was downloaded 1 million times in just 20 days after its launch. To put that number in perspective, less than 6 million people were running iOS 2.0 at the time and even had the ability to download the app in the first place.

By April 2009 comScore declared that one in every three iPhone owners had downloaded the game.

A few years and a few acquisitions later, a new version of Tap Tap is being released Wednesday by Disney Mobile. This iteration is called Tap Tap Revenge: Tour.

If you've played any of the Tap Tap franchise, then Tap Tap Revenge: Tour is going to seem pretty familiar. The music-based game has three bars that run across the screen, each with colored dots that drop down in time with the music. Gameplay involves simply tapping the screen when a dot reaches the bottom. Tour also adds a new type of tapper, requiring you to perform a Fruit Ninja-like slice when it reaches the bottom of the screen, rather than just tapping.

A tour mode has players perform an opening, supporting and headlining musical act in a new city each day. As you play you can unlock additional encore sets and win achievement trophies, as well as earn rewards to display on your Tour Wall. Awards and accomplishments can also be shared with friends on Facebook and Twitter.

"We're recommitting to this game," Bart Decrem, Disney Mobile Games' senior vice president and general manager, told Mashable.

Tap Tap Revenge: Tour gets rid of a lot of things from previous versions, streamlining it and focusing on core components of the game and making gameplay more fun. Decrem says the game was built not only for people who love the franchise, but also for those who might have never played before.

Available at launch are embedded free songs from artists such as LMFAO, AVICCI and Selena Gomez. The game also includes a rotating free music store of more than 300 tracks, in addition to 17 bundles of new premium content available for in-app purchase, with tracks from performers such as Katy Perry, Maroon 5, Lil' Wayne, Far East Movement (feat. Justin Bieber), Demi Lovato, and Lady Gaga.

The game joins a number of other recent releases by Disney such as Temple Run: Brave and Where's My Perry?, which currently rest at the top of both the App and Google Play stores.

"Were figuring out how to win on the App Store," says Decrem. "It's a combination of great playing games, understanding opportunities, and leveraging what we are really good at. Getting to #1 is easy, staying it #1 is hard."

Tap Tap Revenge: Tour is available now for free from the App Store on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
