A user-voted look from Timo Weiland's S/S 2013 collection.
Not everything going down the runway at New York Fashion Week has been dictated by each label's designer. Three up-and-coming labels 2011 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist Carlos Campos, as well as Timo Weiland and Suzanne Rae have showcased looks chosen by their fans.
All three designers (plus Christian Cota, who cancelled his show) partnered with voting design platform CutOnYourBias in the month leading up to Fashion Week. Designers submitted sketches of a range of men's and women's garments, and fans were invited to vote for their favorites.
Those that received the most votes in each category were then produced and shown in their respective collections. The winners looks were announced on cutonyourbias.com and through Instagram as they came down the runway.
In e-mail interviews, both Timo Weiland and Suzanne Rae Pelaez said they were excited and a little nervous about the opportunity to open up the design process and connect with fans leading up to the show.
For Pelaez, the partnership also nicely complimented her long-running desire to invest in domestic production and sustainable materials, both of which, she said, "are much harder to stay true to than you would think. So much waste happens when we sample a ton of items that don't go into production," she explained.
"This collaboration allows us to be more focused about what we sample, reduce waste and improve our bottom line."
