Google Refuses to Remove Anti-Muslim YouTube Video
White House officials on Friday asked YouTube to review an anti-Muslim video cited as fueling violent protests worldwide, but according to The New York Times, the Google-owned site doesn't have any intention of taking it down.
Google told the publication that the "Innocence of Muslims" video does not violate terms of service for YouTube regarding hate speech because it is focused on the Muslim religion and not the people who practice it. Although Google put up a temporary block on the clip in Egypt and Libya due to local violations in those countries, it still remains accessible to most worldwide.
The 14-minute video, which was a trailer for an upcoming "Innocence of Muslims" film thought to be created by an American man upset the Muslim community for insulting the religion's Prophet Muhammad. (Note: Early reports pegged the filmmaker as "Sam Bacile," a supposedly Israeli-American real estate developer living in California. However, certain details didn't add up: There's no licensed real estate developer in California with that name and Israeli officials denied his existence.)
The video has also been credited as contributing to global protests, including the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya, which resulted in the deaths of four U.S. citizens including a U.S. ambassador, and igniting other protests across the globe.
Google's decision to not comply with the White House's request is in line with a company policy from 2007 that said it would consider laws, local policies and culture when deciding whether to remove or restrict a video.
"One type of content, while legal everywhere, may be almost universally unacceptable in one region, yet viewed as perfectly fine in another," Rachel Whetstone, senior VP for communications and public policy at Google, said in the policy. "We are passionate about our users, so we try to take into account local cultures and needs."
YouTube's Community Guidelines "encourage free speech" and "defend everyone's right to express unpopular points of view." However, it does not allow "hate speech," which the company defines as "speech which attacks or demeans a group based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, veteran status, and sexual orientation/gender identity."
The Obama administration initially "reached out to YouTube to call the video to their attention and ask them to review whether it violates their terms of use," Tommy Vietor, spokesman for the National Security Council, told the Washington Post.
UPDATE: The original version of this story said it was believed that the filmmaker was an American-Israeli man, but it has since been updated to reflect that authorities now think a false identity was used.

Why? Because you don't like it? If you don't like it, don't watch it. If you don't watch it, you won't get offended. I'm a christian, and if someone posts an inflammatory video about Jesus, you know what I don't do? I don't watch it. And because I don't watch it, I don't get offended. Anybody that's upset about this video WANTS a reason to be upset.

The author of this really needs to do their homework.
1. Google HAS restricted the video in many nations that had shut down YouTube
2. Irresponsibly stating that this film caused the attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi demonstrates that no facts have been verified. It's even been stated by Libyan authorities that this was a planned attack and that the small demonstration of the film was nothing more than a coincidence or cover for the terrorist attack that killed four Americans.

This is not journalism it's poorly done cut'n'pasteism. It's been established that the person responsible is neither a Jew nor an Israeli citizen first of all, so this is continuing to propagate a myth at the expense of another religion. I think it might qualify as antisemitic seeing as the news of this detail came out two days ago already.
Secondly, in what universe would the white house have any balls at all interfering in any media publication whether entertainment no matter how crude and unacceptable or news however piss poorly presented?
This is a fine example of why one should not give credence nor airtime to a so-called journalist under the age of say 40

Lots of facts wrong in the story, but about the main point, good for Google. Free speech is free speech. If they had to remove every video on YouTube that offends someone then they might as well shut the site down. The movie was crap and I don't like people insulting other people's religion, but if you can restrict free speech for being offensive then you no longer have free speech.

by Christer Rowan
On September 15, 2012 at 1:29 pm
It's a difficult situation. On the one hand, you have someone who has created something that is insulting to an entire religion, and that religion is known to have some extremists who have reacted violently to similar things in the recent past. On the other hand, freedom of speech is a vitally important aspect of U.S. culture.
As was mentioned by another commenter, Google is not required to be the soap box upon which the filmmaker stands. Removing the video would not be a violation of his freedom of speech, it would only remove a particular venue.
However, removing something that does not violate their terms of service, merely because it is offensive, could create a situation in which hundreds of thousands of videos deemed offensive by some group or another would be subject to removal based on this as a precedent.
The filmmaker's actions do not speak for the rest of the United States.
The attackers do not speak for the rest of the Muslims in the world.
And at this point, the damage has already been done. We can't put the cat back into the bag. Even if the video was removed, the mere fact of its existence is damage enough.

Keep it. In this country there is freedom of speech and expression. I don't understand why people from other countries feel that they have the right to dictate what can and cannot be said in this country. If you don't like it, don't listen. If google caves in and takes this down, who's to say that someone won't come along later and decide that a music video, or a recipe channel or whatever has offended their delicate sensibilities and they will start a full out riot if it's not removed? The whole thing is crazy!

"Google told the publication that the "Innocence of Muslims" video does not violate terms of service for YouTube regarding hate speech because it is focused on the Muslim religion and not the people who practice it." and "However, it does not allow "hate speech," which the company defines as "speech which attacks or demeans a group based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, veteran status, and sexual orientation/gender identity."" don't seem to match, the video absolutely attacks a group based on religion.
I don't care what Google does, that's not the issue here. I care that 1) There are people willing to create an extremely poorly made hateful film to incite this kind of thing and 2) People are willing to react violently based on such a poorly made, really not worth our time film, thus proving their point through total ignorance.
There are many Muslims who are using this as an opportunity to educate people on who the Prophet (peace be upon him) really was and what Islam really teaches, that is the correct response. Those who think violence is an appropriate response do not represent Islam or the average Muslim and those of you who think they do and use them as an excuse to insult Muslims and Islam are as bad as the people who wasted their time making this piece of rubbish.

I'm not advocating for them to take it down, I honestly don't care but there's a difference between something that offends someone and something that is made out of hate and in order to incite a particular response, there's no doubt what the intentions behind this film are.

It's a simple issue about an individual's freedom of speech and expression. It doesn't matter whether or not you like it. The Internet and the world, in general, are full of opinions I find ignorant, false, misguided, hateful, and wrong. Even so, everyone is entitled to their opinion and have a right to express it, as long as they are not instructing others to cause harm.
I haven't seen the video and, from what I've heard, I don't think I want to. Still, good on Google for doing the right thing and shame on our government for seeking to censor ideas, no matter how disagreeable they might be.

Along with rights of free speech, we also have the right not to speak. Google, as a private company, has the right to decide what speech to allow or disallow on YouTube. It has the right to consider whether or not certain speech amounts to a deliberate incitement to violence, in view of its professed corporate motto of "do no evil." If I were running Google, I would take down this video. And I think the graphic for the article is misleading. It's not The White House vs. YouTube. Instead, the White House simply called the video to YouTube/Google's attention and asked Google to consider whether the anti-Islam video is in violation of Google's own rules against the posting of "hate speech." That's not censorship; that's a government behaving wisely and with compassion for human life, as well as concern for national security. If this video is not hate speech, then I don't know what is.

This is not about protecting someone's Right to Speech, this is about humanity. Its a disgusting video, ridiculing a religion and hurting the sentiments of many people. So, it becomes a moral obligation of Google to remove such kind of sick video. Also, if removing it saves many people life, Google should remove it. Though i am really sad how some people are reacting on this stupid video by taking innocent lives and destroying properties. In a way, they are themselves dishonoring their religion and proving the maker of this video correct.

No. Removing it is not the answer. People can't start killing other people because they are offended by something that they see on the internet. I'm sorry I saw it and I think it's terrible, but I agree with Jason King, I have also seen offensive things about MY religion online but I'm not going out and starting a riot over it. This world has ENOUGH problems as it is people have to learn to be more tolerant of others AND they have to learn to control their behavior. The guys who made it are idiots and the people who killed a TOTAL stranger over it are idiots, too . you don't get a pass because you're Muslim and you are offended. I'm a Christian and Paul Ryan offends ME . but I'm not out killing uber-conservative republicans because of it. When will this end?????
by Kate Gallagher
On September 15, 2012 at 2:49 pm
Here's the thing though. Would your prophet support violence in their name just because someone decided not to respect it? I doubt it and if your prophet did support this type of violence on this level you might want to research the origins of your prophet more because I believe a true religious figure or ideas where as don't accept slander would not harm those who spoke otherwise. It seems backwards and now people have died because of what? Because someone got a little offended. This to me is a greater sin than that video people should not be hurt or get killed in anyones name, but sadly history proves otherwise. At most you should be thankful we were all born with the freedom of will that allows us these opinions and actions to happen otherwise we might all live in peace or all be dead hard to say, but still that's how I see it.
by Kate Gallagher
On September 15, 2012 at 2:50 pm
Maybe the video would be removed if people had compassion for other people but obviously both sides of this argument refuse to stand a higher ground except the ground which they have chosen which is violence and slander.
by Kate Gallagher
On September 15, 2012 at 2:52 pm
Again if he was the best man then why would it be okay in his eyes for people to kill and riot like this? It doesn't make sense a good man, a compassionate man, a man of religion would not call for this violence.
by Kate Gallagher
On September 15, 2012 at 2:54 pm
It will end on the day when people decide to have compassion and respect for each other until then it looks like this is just going to turn into a bigger battle than it's worth and instead of those who are responsible being held to judgement innocent people will die.

GOOD FOR GOOGLE!!! BRAVO, FOR NOT BENDING TO THE 'OFFENSIVE-SPEECH-POLICE!! Chalk up 1 for FREEDOM, and 0 for 'offensive-and-murderous-riotous-behavior'!
This is not a case of 'shouting fire in a crowded theater',.. These people love 'Islamic-MAYHEM', They GLORIFY rioting, destruction, gangster-ism, thuggery, and murder!! They don't NEED a trigger, they're already 'half-cocked', self-righteous, intolerant tyrants.. which is what their
'FALSE-PROPHET-MOHAMMED' tells them to be!! They are supposed to RULE the world through intimidation, coercion, and violence. That's how they get their 'brownie-points' with Allah 'a la Satan'!
What a pot of untruths they believe? Are they even 'OPEN' to REAL truth, since they believe that they already have truth? They ARE willing to protect 'their' truth (intolerant Islam) with murder, intimidation, and force,. and repression of any information which they deem offensive! Their 'truth' is FEAR-BASED! The BIGGEST LIE is that,.. 'Islam practices Universal Brotherhood', !
How BLIND do you think people are??? It's obvious that Islam can't stand on it's own wicked ideas, so it must COERCE, INTIMIDATE, AND FORCE it's form of 'spiritual darkness' onto others.
Islam (Mohammed) IS the 'FALSE PROPHET', spoken of in Bible prophesies. Mohammed was a FALSE PROPHET, no better than other false prophets throughout history, like Hitler (who was a Pagan-Socialist, NOT a Christian, but Islam supporters often use 'straw-men', like Hitler and Crusades to elevate Islam by false comparisons to so-called Christians-which were not Christians Hitler didn't even pretend to be a Christian, and Haj-amin al-husseini, the Grand mufti of Jerusalem, fervently sought an alliance with Hitler in the 1930s),.., Haman, Stalin, and, yes, some who 'claimed' to be Christian, but were not, with their 'Inquisitions', and 'Pogroms' though I don't condemn Crusaders for force-of-arms against Islam invaders, I condemn their atrocities against the Jews, and innocent people, just as I condemn today's Islamists for suicide-bombings, torture, be-headings, and mindless violence! They must always resort to 'gangster-ism' and violent coercion, because they are FALSE. There are plenty of wicked people in America, and the world,.. having various beliefs.
However, only REAL TRUTH liberates people in God's Love, not forced 'SELF-RIGHTEOUS' RULES and regulations created by false prophets! ONLY God's Love,.. available to any 'humble-heart-ed individual', and received 'willingly' and honestly without force, but through trust in Jesus Christ, is THE Salvation of each soul! Think about it.

I'm with Eugene Volokh, removing the video with result in many more deaths. What is the White house thinking?

Anthony: you are saying that rewarding murderous behavior will not result in more of that behavior. Taking this video down will result in a cycle of violence every time these Muslim protesters feel slightly insulted. Leave it up, ESPECIALLY NOW.

That has happen before in history, but did they stopped bathing each others in blood then? Certainly not. Muslim VS rest of the world will last long, as long as there's so called true muslim who only read and followed the Quran but can't think and act accordingly for the sake of everything else including their religion.

How does this make you feel? Bukhari (52:177) Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."

While I think the Video is very bad on many accounts, not just production .I think Google is taking the right track. One of the Key Issues NOT discussed in this entire episode is the lack of Tolerance shown by Extreme Fanatics of Islam. I DON'T think it's ok to malign ones Faith however, our Unites States Constitution allows for Free Speech even if it's of this nature. Muslim leaders need to TEACH TOLERANCE and we in the US need to have an active dialog about this too. Why do we allow our Leaders to make excuses and apologies for our Laws ?

For years we hear the Muslims shouting out loud "kill the Jews", "butcher them all" or "Itbach el yahud" like they say in Arabic. The Iranian leader has no problem calling us pigs and monkeys and makes his opinion public in any chance he has. Ah, but when someone has an unfavorable opinion on Islam, he/she better watch for their lives.
I am not surprise that your president asked to, maybe, remove the video. Instead of having the balls to stand up and call the global unrest an "uncivilized and primitive show of emotions", he rather tries to appease them.
The point here is not the movie, the point here is the utter intolerance and violent reaction of a whole race to an unfavorable opinion of their religion.

Its not just for muslims here. Its for everyone. Anyways youtube does have an option called "REPORT" if majority does hit that button its wrong to ignore it. Public counts though not everyones thoughts are equal. The good side of the decision (with least consequence) is always the best one to take in such matters.

Anthony: Keeping it up will SAVE lives. If google takes it down just to appease the offended muslims, then we are teaching them that violent protests work, and any time in the future they get offended, they will do the same damn thing.

You know what would save a bunch of lives? Crazy muslims not over reacting everytime they get offended. Hey, some guy made a video hating on muslims because they are 1,000 years behind the rest of the world, and they cause violence every time they get offended. I have an idea, let's get angry, act like we are 1,000 years behind the times, and cause a bunch of violence because we are offended!
It's not about the video. The issue with humanity rests solely on those who watch the video, get offended, and resort to violence. If we have the power to show someone a
