Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend, drove to the team's stadium and then fatally shot himself in the head Saturday morning, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department said.
The National Football League kept its fans updated on the situation via social media, particularly Twitter, where fellow NFL players turned to to grieve and react to the deaths.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Chiefs and the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy," the NFL said in a statement that was also shared through tweets from @NFL. "We have connected the Chiefs with our national team of professional counselors to support both the team and the families of those affected. We will continue to provide assistance in any way that we can."
Police spokesman Darin Snapp told NFL.com that 25-year-old Belcher shot 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins, whom together leave behind an infant daughter. Outside Arrowhead Stadium, Belcher then shot himself in front of Chiefs staff, including coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli.
