CoFoundersLab is Like Match.com For Aspiring Entrepreneurs

The Launchpad is a series that introduces Mashable readers to compelling startups. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here.

Name: CoFoundersLab

One-Liner Pitch: CoFoundersLab helps aspiring entrepreneurs connect through their online platform and in-person events across the country.

Why It's Taking Off: The startup unites co-founders based on geographic location, complementary skill sets, compatible personalities, goals and values.

So you've got a great idea for a startup and maybe you even have the venture capital to back it up, but you need to find a co-founder with complimentary skills to help your business flourish. What do you do?

CoFoundersLab is a free online service that aims to connect aspiring co-founders with mutual business goals. Potential pairs are matched up based on the results of their Entrepreneur Archetype Assessment. The assessment helps identify what drives different entrepreneurs, and finds matches based on geographic location, complementary skills sets, compatible personalities, goals and values. Whether you're looking to join a startup or you're seeking someone else to join your business venture, CoFoundersLab helps you find the right person.

The co-founders of CoFoundersLab Culin Tate and Shahab Kaviani are both accomplished entrepreneurs who attribute much of their past startup success to the healthy partnerships they built with previous co-founders. The pair met at the very first Co-Founders Wanted Meetup in Maryland in 2010, where they quickly recognized the obstacles involved in finding a compatible co-founder. After putting their heads together, the two dreamt up a solution to this age-old problem and they founded CoFoundersLab that same year. Kaviani refers to their site as being like eHarmony or Match.com for entrepreneurs.

CoFoundersLab started by organizing Co-Founder Meetups around the DC Metro area, and their online matching platform CoFoundersLab.com went live in November 2011. A few months after the launch of the online platform, CoFoundersLab was accepted into The Fort, Fortify Ventures' first startup accelerator in DC where they received seed funding as well as mentorship and guidance on how to grow their business.

CoFoundersLab is now hosting matchmaking events in over 20 cities in the U.S., and they held their first international event in Tel Aviv with plans to expand in other markets like Chile and Mexico.

In addition to events and the online platform, CoFoundersLab is now collaborating with some of the top universities in the country to help students and alumni find co-founders. By partnering with universities, CoFoundersLab hopes to bring together entrepreneurs from different disciplines across campus. For example, uniting someone in the business department with someone from engineering or physics. Some of the impressive universities that have aligned with CoFoundersLab are: Harvard University, Cornell University, New York University and Georgetown University just to name a few.

Write the World is the success story of two Harvard alums who met at a CoFoundersLab event at the Harvard Innovation Lab. Write the World is an education startup dedicated to offering high school students a research-based writing program, helping them build a portfolio of writing skills in a variety of subjects. Students get expert feedback that helps them develop stronger and more effective writing skills.

Universities aren't the only organizations taking advantage of CoFoundersLab's matchmaking services. Entrepreneurial organizations like TechStars are also taking advantage of the website, with some recent success. Mobiplug was a 2012 TechStars Boulder grad that recently raised $2.7 million in Series A funding, and there are many other success stories already. Check out the video below from some testimonials from people who met through CoFounderLabs.

CoFoundersLab is a six person team based in Rockville, Maryland. Most of their services are available through the freemium model, but there is a Pro Membership plan for more ambitious power users on the site.
