Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) is rolling out its digital art platform, The Studio, to the US, Canada, Mexico and Brazil following huge success in Europe.
The Studio hosts static and dynamic themes from artists, illustrators, graphic and digital designers such as Jasper Goodall, eBoy and Anthony Burrill, which are available to download via the PlayStation Network to personalise the PS3 experience.
Themes cost between $1.99 - $2.99 and are a combination of wallpapers and icons for the PS3 system's XMB (XrossMediaBar).
The global expansion will see creative agency Studio Output, who is responsible for the creation and curation of the platform, bring in a series of guest designers from the music and fashion worlds. Most notably this includes British rock band Kasabian, as well as UK urban artist and producer Labrinth. Also signed up from the fashion world are urban designer Maharishi, streetwear brand ADDICT Clothing and set designer and illustrator Gary Card. Joining them are Iron Maiden illustrator Derek Riggs, visionary music photographer and director Timothy Saccenti, the artist who defined Britpop, Michael Gillette, and the world's premier paper sculptor, Jeff Nishinaka.
Ian Hambleton, founding partner at Studio Output said that The Studio taps into and re-invigorates the trend for customisation that has been hugely popular in recent years, and is part of the emergence of on demand entertainment.
Consumers want to own this space and add their personal stamp to technology brands. Yes, we could give them their pick of a range of colours and naff textured backgrounds which is boring and expensive for brand and consumer - or at a very low cost, we can allow them to bring the kind of art, design and illustration that speaks to them personally onto a brand new canvas their screens at home."
Dan Moore, Studio Output's creative director added that this project pushes what can be done technically and creatively - be it through traditional sprite-based 2 animation, or more experimental 3D generative techniques.
The Studio will also feature artists' reinterpretations of Sony's favourite games, including Killzone 3, LittleBigPlanet, God of War and Uncharted, starting with a very special rework of Sackboy from legendary artist, Ian Wright.
The themes will be available in the PlayStation Store from tomorrow, under The Studio icon in the Themes & Avatars category.
