With the upcoming launch of the Moto X on Aug. 23, customers will be given a brand new opportunity: building their cellphone from the ground up with Motorola's Moto Maker.
The web app lets buyers customize everything from the color of the smartphone to its wallpaper, ultimately making the perfect phone designed just for them.

Motorola gave me the opportunity to take the Moto Maker out for a spin a bit before it becomes available to the public, and I walked away fairly impressed with the process - especially how easy it is to change your mind.
After entering the unique code provided to you after purchase, the Moto Maker takes you step by step through the process of customizing your phone; the first step being selecting the color of the back plate. Motorola offers 18 different back plate options ranging from the traditional - like black and white to bright greens and pinks.
You're also able to select one of seven accent colors for the volume rocker and accent around the phone's camera, and choose between a white or black front plate for the device.
Finally, you can have the rear of your phone engraved with your name or a personal message, and customize the launch screen of the handset and wallpaper. You can even go ahead and connect your Google account so the phone will be ready to go when it arrives on your doorstep.
As you design, you can check out a 360-degree view of your creation. Colors change almost instantly, so it's not difficult to compare a few different options. AT&T will also be offering "experience tables" in stores where you can check out what some of the materials look like in person.
On a quest to create the brightest handset possible, I ultimately decided on a Raspberry phone with Metallic Yellow accents.
Will it look as good in person as it does online? We'll find out Monday when it arrives. Shipments from the design-your-own site are currently expected to arrive four days after placing your order.
The Moto X will be available in stores starting Friday, Aug. 23. AT&T customers can purchase the black and white versions in store, or customize their own handset online. The 16GB version of the phone costs $199 with a new 2-year contract, and the 32GB version is $249.99.
