Everyone knows that hearing ability changes as we grow older, but have you ever wondered if your hearing is deteriorating at the average rate?
A nifty little test from YouTube channel AsapSCIENCE will help you determine whether your ears have the appropriate hearing ability for your age range. The video plays a series of pitches at varying frequencies, and tells you which age range you're likely in, if you can hear the sounds.
According to the folks at AsapSCIENCE, our ability to hear different frequencies depends on tiny hair cells living inside our ears. When the cells encounter sound waves, they experience small levels of damage. Because hair cells that detect the highest frequencies are the first to meet sound waves, they deteriorate the fastest. Sounds like a bummer, but really, it's totally natural.
Take the test, then tell us: How old are your ears? Share your results in the comments.
