6. 6. Before Sunrise (Amazon Prime)

   Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke star in this wonderful story about two strangers sharing a single day in Vienna. The two drifters walk and talk their way through the city, forging a connection beyond attraction. It's both romantic and smart, a rare combination in Hollywood. It's also well-loved, garnering a rare 100% rating among the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

7. 7. Strictly Ballroom (Hulu, Netflix)

   Director Baz Luhrmann's first feature film is a wonderfully wacky look at competitive ballroom dancing in the land down under. A rebellious Australian ballroom champ gets schooled in life and love on the dance floor in this colorful, sparkly movie. You and your date may be inspired to learn the paso doble after watching this.

8. 8. Eat Drink Man Woman (Netflix)

   Many movies have chronicled the importance of food in our lives, but director Ang Lee's film Eat Drink Man Woman is one of the best in the field. The three daughters of a famed chef in Taiwan navigate romantic and cultural boundaries in between weekly family dinners.

9. 9. Shakespeare in Love (Netflix)

   For historical fiction fans, this imagined life of William Shakespeare is a great choice. It's a stylish costume piece that won some serious Oscar hardware, including Best Picture. Leading lady Gwyneth Paltrow took home an Academy Award for Best Actress, and the imperious Dame Judi Dench won Best Supporting Actress.

10. 10. Kissing Jessica Stein (Amazon Prime, Netflix)

    Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen cowrote and costarred in this sweet rom-com. Jessica Stein is a copyeditor who embarks on her first relationship with another woman, realizing that she may have found the reason the men she dates always fall short. But she's reluctant to tell her family about the lady in her life, creating some very awkward situations. It's a fascinating look at both dating and sexuality.

12. 12. Stranger Than Fiction (Crackle)

    Will Ferrell shows that he has chops beyond being ludicrous in this quirky, dark comedy. There is a romance in Stranger Than Fiction, but it's not the heart of the movie. It's one part of how Ferrell's character, with the help of a high-powered cast including Maggie Gyllenhaal and Emma Thompson, creates a life worth living for himself.
