Photographer Crafts Mind-Melting Images Without Photoshop

The word Photoshop has evolved to function as a noun, adjective and verb. The Adobe program has become an essential tool for photographers looking to tweak and manipulate their images.

Jerry Uelsmann is a photographer of the old school who modifies his work not on the computer, but in the dark room. Uelsmann crafts his surreal photographs by combining and layering images to create a single composite. Three separate photos meld together to create something Uelsmann hopes will trigger an emotional reaction in those who see it.

The National Gallery of Art in New York is hosting the "Faking It: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop" exhibit featuring some of Uelsmann's stunning work through May 5.
