If you've been keeping up with Google Glass, you've probably seen Steven Yau. He's the man in one of the most widely circulated press photos of Glass. Before the headset became a real object that people could touch, Yau's photo which has him wearing both Glass and a big grin was the lead image for many articles about Google Glass, including on Mashable.
Yau's photo is one of the most-often used for Glass, and it's easy to see why. His winning smile is emblematic of the unbridled enthusiasm that Google and its developer base has for Glass. And that enthusiasm happens to be genuine: Yau isn't a model he's a programmer on the project.
We ran into Yau at the Glass booth at Google I/O 2013, and asked him about his newfound fame as the most famous Google-Glass model on the Internet.
Do you get recognized?
Not so much here. When I was in New York, people recognized me: doormen, and totally random people.
Because of your photo? Or because you were just wearing Glass?
I think they saw the Glass, and then did a double take and then were like, "You look really familiar." Now everyone here has Glass.
Why has your photo been the photo for Glass?
Really, I'm the best looking (laughs). I really don't know.
Have you had Glass a long time?
I've been on the project for about two years. I work on the apps team, working on things like the MyGlass app, Hangouts, some other random things.
What are you working on now?
All of us are working on stuff, fixing bugs everywhere. I can't really say anything specific.
Think you'll be the model for the next big Google wearable?
I hope not. I think I'd be content to sit behind a desk.
Hasn't being the "Glass Guy" been great, though?
No, it has. It's been a good project to work on.
