Tesla CEO Elon Musk Calls Fuel Cell Cars 'Bullsh-t'

When SpaceX founder Elon Musk isn't sending rocket ships into space, he's circling the globe promoting the advantages of electric cars over gas vehicles as Tesla CEO.

However, in a recent speech in Germany, the entrepreneur most often compared to Tony Stark had a few choice words for another alternative energy category: hydrogen fuel cell powered cars.

In front of packed audience in Munich, Musk said, "Fuel cells are so bullshit." The comment came as Musk was winding up his explanation as to why electric cars should be the leading alternative energy solution to power vehicles around the world.

"The only reason they do fuel cell [is because] it's like a marketing thing," said Musk. "But the reality is, you take a fuel cell vehicle, and you take best case for a fuel cell vehicle in terms of mass and volume required to go particular range … it doesn't even equal the current state of the art in lithium ion batteries. So there's no way for it to be a workable technology."

Musk also leaned from his experience with SpaceX to make a point regarding what he feels is the impractical nature of fuel cell technology.

"Putting up a huge hydrogen distribution structure is also extremely difficult," said Musk. "And hydrogen is quite a dangerous gas. It's suitable for the upper stage of rockets, but not for cars."

In addition to his takedown of fuel cell technology, Musk also offered some insight into the future of Tesla in 2014.

Next year the company plans to upgrade the car's dashboard browser to Chrome, and Musk is even considering adding a pure Android emulator to the car so drivers can run Android apps on the vehicle's 17-inch dashboard touchscreen.
