Pooping in Space and 13 Other Cosmic Tutorials

1. 1. Wash Your Hair

   Washing your hair in space is a cinch -- all you need is a squirt bag of warm water, no-rinse shampoo and a towel. Watch as NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg shows off her luscious locks while sporting the troll doll look. Even cooler: Nyberg lets the water evaporate from her hair after she washes it; eventually, it filters through the station's water system as drinking water.

2. 2. Wash Your Hands

   Similar to hair, washing your hands in space involves a squirt bag of water. Watch as Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield squeezes out a ball of soapy water onto his hands and wipes them with a towel.

3. 3. Shave Your Head

   To shave your head in space, you'll need to hack together a hair trimmer and vacuum cleaner into one contraption. NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy welcomes us into "Chris' Barbershop," complete with jazzy background music, as he shaves his head to welcome aboard fellow Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano.

4. 4. Barf

   Lunch doesn't sit well -- or at all -- in space. It can be hard to adjust to food swirling around in your stomach, and sometimes, even astronauts get sick. To show us how to puke in space, Hadfield uses a tricked-out barf bag with a built-in liner and zipper storage compartment -- you know, so the vomit doesn't float away.

5. 5. Make a Sandwich

   Tortillas, which have less crumbs than bread, are stored in an oxygen-free environment to prevent mold from growing. Because of this, space tortillas preserve for up to 18 months. Watch as Hadfield makes a honey and peanut butter sandwich.

6. 6. Brush Your Teeth

   After brushing his teeth (to the tune of "Happy Birthday," presumably), Hadfield casually swallows the toothpaste -- then squirts water into his mouth and swallows that, too.

7. 7. Cook Spinach

   Watch as Hadfield attaches a package of dried spinach to a machine that hydrates it in seconds -- all, of course, to the sounds of Verdi's "La donna è mobile."

   It's a masterpiece.

8. 8. Go to the Bathroom

   A question you've always wanted to ask: How do astronauts go to the bathroom in space? It's a difficult task that requires special training with a practice toilet. The "positioning toilet" has an accompanying camera, so astronauts can practice their alignment.

   As for the real thing, there are a bunch of contraptions to keep astronauts strapped in and tubes that direct the waste where it needs to go. If the space toilet happens to be broken, Apollo Fecal Bags will do the trick.

9. 9. Clean Up a Mess

   Hadfield reveals that the ISS has an abundance of baby wipes on hand for cleaning up minor spills and messes. For toxic and hazardous leaks, however, he uses a contaminated clean-up kit, which includes protective goggles, gloves, masks and towels.

10. 10. Sleep

    Here's another fun fact: Pillows and mattresses aren't necessary in space because there's no gravity! Mind blown. Astronauts sleep in pods with sleeping bags tied to the walls. Hadfield claims you can just relax your body and sleep, like Frankenstein.

    Bonus: He also shows off his full-length footie pajamas.

11. 11. Cut Your Nails

    The trick? Air vents.

12. 12. Make a Burrito

    Space food can be pretty boring, to say the least, so Chef Traci Des Jardins concocted a rice and beans steak burrito for Hadfield.

    Another fun fact: Nothing falls out of a burrito in space.

13. 13. Drink Coffee

    Since liquid doesn't stay put in space, having a regular cup of joe in the morning is extremely difficult. A patented cup, which has a sharp interior corner and curved edge, takes advantage of capillary flow so liquids stay along one edge and flow directly into your mouth. Even better, you can drink all your coffee down to the last drop.

14. 14. Exercise

    Forget the Harlem Shake -- this is the "Hadfield Shake." Watch as he straps himself to a treadmill and uses a complex weight-lifting machine to get fit.

Life can be a little different in space — without the pull of gravity, liquids and matter float everywhere. At the International Space Station, where astronauts stay for months at a time, there are limited space and resources, so routine jobs — like washing hair and making sandwiches — are much more difficult than here on Earth.
