Two universities were the talk of the Internet early Monday after Stanford traded its old Twitter handle, @SUAthletics, to Syracuse for fruits both symbolic and literal.
"The trade is believed to be the first blockbuster trade in college athletics," Stanford wrote on its athletics website. "To complete the trade, Syracuse will send a collection of local goods to be named later but also including one case of oranges, which Stanford intends to use in refilling its 2011 Orange Bowl trophy."
The schools' social media accounts circulated the humorous announcement, and explained that the name change occurred after the creation of Stanford's new handle, @GoStanford.

"Obviously we're thrilled to activate @GoStanford as our official Twitter handle and pull off this dynamic trade," said Bernard Muir, The Jaquish & Kenninger director of athletics at Stanford, in the statement. "From a branding standpoint, this trade makes sense for both schools. We held both accounts the social media equivalent to having two starting quarterbacks, and we wanted to derive as much value fun as possible. We expect great things from our new starter, @GoStanford, and wish @SUAthletics good luck in a new home."
The announcement also noted another Stanford-Syracuse exchange from just less than a week ago, underlining the Cardinal's acquisition of Tim O'Toole as the new assistant basketball coach.
At time of writing, the NCAA had yet to comment on or tweet about the "trade," but the rest of the Twitterverse was all hands on deck.
While the trade gives Syracuse Athletics control of @suathletics, we have no plans to switch our primary handle Twitter handle (@cuse) at...

@tjbasalla We are not sure what we will do with @suathletics but we didn't want anyone else to grab it after Stanford was done with it.

@GeorgeSchroeder @McMurphyESPN We can confirm that @CoachDavidShaw was not discussed during negotiations. #gostanford

@RobLong47 Great idea but our sunny days are non-negotiable. @Cuse bargained hard but Central NY has plenty to offer on that front.

hoping 1st question at today's ACC presser is to Jim Boeheim asking him about @cuse trading for the rights to @suathletics from @gostanford

The Stanford/Syracuse twitter handle trade may be 1st of its kind. Or, maybe just 1st time anyone bothered to put out a press release after.

The local goods Syracuse is sending Stanford include Dino BBQ sauce, lock of Charley Loeb's hair & chance to ask Boeheim if he's retiring.
